Wedding Prep: Tasting This & That

I never understood the big deal about “tasting” during wedding prep until I started planning my own wedding. Suddenly it was imperative for me to start tasting cakes, desserts, finger foods, cocktails and a lot of other stuff to be able to make the right decision for the day. I wasn’t prepared for how much food I would have to consume just by “tasting” and my unpreparedness cost me a few “tasting” kilograms. After a few weeks of tasting this and that, I decided to sit down and write a “tasting” plan to avoid sabotaging all my efforts to fit into my dream dress.

If you are in the same situation I am in right now, my “tasting” plan can help you too! This way you can taste all the things you need to while ensuring that you are on track to achieving your fitness goals. Ready? Here we go…

1.   Don’t schedule too many tasting appointments at the same time. This may not work for everyone but being able to space out my tasting appointments help me feel less guilty about indulging in the sweet treats. A tasting appointment once a week or once in two weeks works out just fine.
2.   Drink loads of water before your tasting appointment. Just before the appointment – about 10 – 20 minutes before, try to sip through some water. About 500ml to 1 litre of water is just right. You will feel “full” and not be tempted to taste everything in sight. Caveat: This only works if you have access to a bathroom afterwards. 😊
3.   Have only protein and veggies prior to the appointment. It’s a great idea to skip the starch and sugar and have a protein and veggies meal before your appointment. The proteins and fibre will keep you full and hinder you from overeating at the appointment.
4.   Ask for bite sizes. If possible, ask for bite sizes rather than whole portions of whatever you will be given to taste. After all it’s a tasting session and not a meal. 😊
5.   Have some company. Having your partner, family member or friend along will ensure that you have someone to split things with. Do not ask for two portions of one item. Split it instead.
6.   If it will make you feel better, you can aim to train intensively on tasting days to leave you with an energy deficit for the sweets you will be having. It is not compulsory but it works for me. I feel less guilty when I train on days I know I will be indulging in certain foods.

Finally, if you go for a tasting and you blow it, do not be discouraged and angry at yourself. These things happen! Let it go and continue eating healthy afterwards. You’ll be fine!

  1. Wow, how nice.

You have intelligently highlighted this issue and brilliantly addressed it. I promise, most brides don't even consider this as an issue until it become's one.

    Well done Uzo!!!
